Trasposizione dell'omonima favola scritta dallo stesso regista, il sesto lavoro del famoso indiano rivela le sue debolezze, probabilmente, proprio nell'impianto narrativo. Parliamoci chiaro: raramente si sono viste favole così lente e soporifere, con così tanti problemi a decollare. Il soggetto non è davvero male, le musiche sono fantastiche e gli attori protagonisti se la cavano perfettamente (vi è pure lo stesso Shyamalan nei panni di Vick!), ma il ritmo complessivo è assurdamente lento. Tutto è giocato su numerosi dialoghi, più o meno utili, e pochissimo succede su schermo fino alla parte conclusiva dell'opera, dove finalmente si vede un pò di azione e magia. E, come avrete capito, nè l'approfondimento psicologico di lui e nè la vicenda principale funzionano davvero bene, banalmente perchè nessuna delle due è sufficientemente rappresentata. Tutto ciò è terribilmente grottesco, perchè fa balneare in testa l'idea che chi ha messo in piedi questa storia lo ha fatto quando il manga era già pienamente sviluppato (e in effetti il film viene girato appena 2 anni prima dalla conclusione del fumetto), solo che chi lo ha letto lo ha fatto estremamente di sfuggita. Volendo comunque fare finta di niente, inquadrando questo (ed i successivi) film come ambientato in un improbabile e demente universo alternativo, si può dire che La Grande Sfida Europea si risolve in un filmetto senza infamia nè lode, assolutamente vuoto e inutile quanto a storia o personaggi, ma discreto nella partita Giappone-Europa che è il fulcro dell'intera produzione. Nei suoi 30 minuti di svolgimento il match è gradevole, pur peccando anche lì di qualche ingenuità a livello di caratterizzazione dei personaggi (i fratelli Tachibana che fanno gioco individualista?!) e affogato nella solita melassa di bei sentimenti, di "loro non sono una vera squadra, noi sì" and so on. Il buon ritmo e le buone musiche riescono a far raggiungere la sufficienza al film, che comunque non va al di sopra di essa per animazioni indegne di un film cinematografico e per un finale di uno squallore senza limiti (basicamente: non c'è! Se a questo aggiungiamo anche che Oshii fa di tutto per rendere la comprensione sempre più difficile infarcendo il tutto con una pletora di riferimenti a linguaggi informatici e a citazioni, più o meno gratuite, a Milton, a tratti della religione islamica, ebraica e del confucianesimo, capirete che una visione passiva del prodotto è tassativamente vietata. Ce ne è abbastanza per avere mal di testa, e questo è divertente perchè, spogliato dalla sua cornice criptica e complessa questo film ha una storia semplice, un pò come il primo film... Invoglia invece ad andare avanti nella visione la realizzazione tecnica, che probabilmente segna un nuovo standard per i film d'animazione: gli ambienti barocchi e gotici messi sui dai creativi della Production I.G. sono una gioia per gli occhi. Impossibili da descrivere, sono di una bellezza maestosa e quasi esagerata, immersi in colorazioni perlopiù calde e totalmente realizzati in potente e meravigliosa computer graphic con una cura maniacale per i dettagli, perfettamente accompagnati da una mistica - quasi religiosa - colonna sonora di Kenji Kawai. Innocence è un film incredibilmente lento, difficile da seguire, e se non preso nel modo giusto si risolve quasi come un potente sonnifero. Ma con un pò di impegno e di buona volontà non è così impossibile seguirlo, ed accorgersi della sua ottima sceneggiatura e dell'ottimo mondo cyberpunk messo in piedi da Shirow. Signori e signori, ecco una delle più grandi trashate che l'animazione giapponese abbia mai prodotto. Per il secondo film dedicato a Captain Tsubasa la Tsuchida Production si sforza di creare una storia ancora più assurda ed inverosimilmente ridicola del film precedente, ed il risultato finale è, per la nostra felicità, un vero concentrato di idiozie. Certo non da ricondurre neanche stavolta alla consueta assurdità del calcio alieno praticato da Tsubasa e compagni (se non lo si adora tanto vale neanche seguire le diverse opere dedicate al capolavoro di Takahashi), bensì alle nuove numerose imbecillità inventate dagli sceneggiatori Tsuchida che scombinano, oltre alla coerenza narrativa dell'universo creato dall'autore originale, anche quella del mondo normale! Perchè Wakabayashi non può giocare nella rappresentativa giapponese? Ovvio, la Federazione glielo impedisce perchè lui, essendo sotto contratto in una squadra tedesca, non può indossare la maglia del proprio paese! Ma che si sono fumati per venirsene fuori con una sparata simile? Il terribile difetto di Garzey's Wing è la noia: nei tre lunghi episodi che lo compongono (per un totale di un'ora e mezza di durata) non si capisce mai a che razza di storia si sta assistendo. Non soltanto ogni avvenimento viene diretto in modo veloce e sbrigativo rendendo terribilmente confusionaria la storia, ma i dialoghi sono di una bruttezza disarmante. E' incredibile infatti come la caratterizzazione dei personaggi si regge unicamente su velocissimi scambi di battute, che rendono tutto il cast vuoto e immediatamente dimenticabile. Parlare di capolavoro forse è ancora un pò troppo presto, ma quel che è certo è che l'ultimo lavoro di Nolan ha i numeri per rivendicarlo e comunque, ora come ora, oltre a miglior film di Batman, è sicuramente una pietra miliare nell'ambito di film supereroistici, una gemma splendente su cui ogni futuro film di eroi DC Comics o Marvel si ritroverà inevitabilmente a fare i conti. Questo perchè il film di Nolan è innanzitutto un riuscito film d'autore, a prescindere dal suo successo commerciale dovuto alla solito ignobile meccanismo con cui una massiccia e martellante campagna promozionale costruisce un'hype spaventosa attorno a film specifici decretandone il sicuro successo commerciale a prescindere dalla qualità effettiva. Certo, il successo del film di Nolan era scritto mesi prima che uscisse, "merito" anche della morte di Ledger (nei panni di una memorabile interpretazione del Joker) che ha rivestito il film di un'aurea "maledetta" (alla " Il corvo ") dall'immensa pubblicità, eppure Il Cavaliere Oscuro è, sicuramente, un signor film e probabilmente la migliore trasposizione filmica mai operata su un comic. Facciamo una bella tabula rasa dei nostri preconcetti sul genere "supereroistico", perchè andare a vedere Il Cavaliere Oscuro non è una passeggiata. Non pensate di trovarvi di fronte ad un film alla Schumacher rivolto a un target giovane e pieno di azione e bat-gadgets: se avete già visto il precedente Begins potete intuire cosa aspettarvi, ma neanche del tutto visto che la cupezza che si respira qui è parecchio più pesante del film precedente. Il Cavaliere Oscuro è un film tenebroso, assolutamente non per bambini, dove la violenza imperante, l'inibizione di un happy ending e l'assurdo sadismo del Joker sono capaci di mettere a disagio lo spettatore. Non stiamo parlando di un film dove il cattivone prende in mano ostaggi e Batman li libera sconfiggendo il cattivo, ma parliamo di un thriller di tensione e violenza dove un sadico si diverte a uccidere persone e a sovvertire le regole ed i ruoli delle istituzioni, dove le love story finiscono incenerite nel sangue, dove Batman si lascia andare ad eccessi di violenza... Se dal lato horror il film, nonostante il plot "cupo" (si parla di fantasmi di bambini uccisi per essere venduti al mercato nero) dimostra una lentezza assurda e effetti speciali di una bruttezza rara (il terrificante make up dei bambini è dato dai loro occhi che si illuminano di rosso come una lampadina!), in chiave di spazzatura not so bad. Tutto ciò rende il prodotto ancora più culto, e l'ultima cosa che deve convincervi a reperirlo è l'eccezionale scena nel quale il leader dei ribelli, padre della Khambatta, viene salvato a costo del rapimento di sua figlia. E, chissà perchè, continua a ridere e scherzare con Ginty come se nulla fosse per tutto il resto del film! Eccezionale!
