Ichi the Killer, one of the most disturbing manga ever drawn, in 2001 became a long two-hour movie directed by the famous Mike, achieving a resounding success in spite of significant global differerenze with the original comic (starting looking terrible physical Kakihara, passing through the level of violence significantly appattito - but strong - and then reach the final, totally different). L'anno dopo l'autore del manga Hideo Yamamoto, per ottenere giustizia nei riguardi della suo fumetto, accetta di scrivere la sceneggiatura per un mediometraggio di animazione più fedele alla sua opera: nasce così l'oav Episode Zero , che funge da prequel a Ichi the Killer pur essendo ispirato alla controparte cartacea. La dichiarazione d'intenti viene subito attualizzata nella sequenza d'apertura, dove rivediamo lo scontro tra Ichi e Kakihara rivisitato secondo la sanguinosa versione manga (Kakihara è poi doppiato dallo stesso Miike, in quanto fan!), anche se rimane l'unico punto di differenza tra oav e film. I restanti 40 minuti sono totalmente focalizzati sulla giovinezza di Ichi al liceo, maltrattato dai comrades and forced every humiliation, shameful childhood that led him to put up with until the straw that broke the camel and will deliver its fury. We must say that the OVA itself is quite good: the story is well told and supported by an interesting and experimental techno-metal OST, and especially is terribly perverse and morbid as you might expect. Extreme sex and violence (though not too explicit) result in the fact Ishidaria toy, and is thus able to compensate for the lack of a real story to tell (but then what else you might look for quest'oav?). Ugly speech to do for the animations, static and recycled, even reminiscent serie televisive, ed è ignobile pensando che si parla di un costoso prodotto home-video. Discorso invece diverso per il chara design, che può piacere o non piacere nel suo essere estremamente particolare, semplicistico e cupo, che richiama ferocemente il tratto del manga originario. Alla fine della fiera quest' Episode Zero non è certo un brutto prodotto: gli appassionati del film (ossia gli amanti oltranzisti di tutto ciò che è perverso e morboso) lo troveranno accettabile, e seppur delusi da una violenza più accennata che mostrata certamente non lo schiferanno. Ma se si cerca qualcosa di narrativamente più complesso e realizzato in modo migliore si può evitare.
