Di ritorno a casa dopo 15 ingiusti anni di prigione, il barbiere Benjamin Barker viene a sapere che il giudice Turpin, l'uomo che lo ha condannato per poter così insidiare sua moglie in sua assenza, ha finito col causare il suicidio di lei. Oltretutto Turpin ha pure preso con sè la loro figlia Johanna, rinchiudendola in casa sua come un uccellino in gabbia. Pazzo dal dolore e dall'odio, Barker si rinomina Sweeney Todd e, con l'aiuto dell'aiutante Nellie Lovette, inizia a sfogare la sua rabbia sgozzando tutti i pazienti che gli capitano a tiro. I resti delle vittime verranno utilizzati per farne involtini di carne...
Leggendaria, stravagante figura a metà tra il simpatico e il sanguinario, Sweeney Todd nasce nel 1846 dalla penna di Thomas Peckett Prest, quale primissimo esempio di serial killer letterario. Il personaggio ispirerà quindi diversi scritti, due film (di cui uno del veterano Schlesinger) and especially a famous musical by Stephen Sondheim. And 'This is what should concern us, not just us: Tim Burton will be to fall in love, deciding to translate that into a real film given the usual interpretrazione of Depp and Carter. And the result, being signed Burton, of course, is fantastic. It 's rare to see that there are indeed capable directors, at a distance of 30 years, to continue to churn out high quality film without ever repeating itself, almost always with amazing results. Burton is probably a genius of cinema, because every movie has a kind of magic that can let you worship even in spite of some neo. And in Sweeney Todd has one: the ending. A conclusion so hasty, no special twists and turn so lazy rarely has been seen in a film of the great man, and it is a sin. This was because the rest of the sublime: in an original mix of CG and live scenes from a nineteenth-century London was rebuilt in a baroque and mysterious, giving off an aura of mystery thanks to a particular use of filters reminiscences from cold and gray, giving an alien and fascinating appeal. The usual excellent performances of Depp and Carter are then the rest, made immortal by long songs from them counted (Depp has practiced alone for months!), Catchy and fun (but not the music of Danny Elfman and feel too bad). In each momento del film la poesia e la magia di Burton si sentono come di consueto, nelle idee sceniche come nel suo uscire perennemente dagli schemi cinematografici (chi l'avrebbe detto che ci sarebbe andato così pesantemente sul versante splatter?), ed è veramente un peccato che quello che avrebbe potuto essere una pietra miliare del cinema finisca ridimensionato dal crollo di idee presente nel finale, davvero indegno della caratura del regista in questione. Ma un brutto finale certo non rovina un film per l''80% assolutamente straordinario, affascinante e a metà tra lo scioccante ed il divertente, che riconferma il giudizio qualitativo sulla figura del grande regista americano.
